What is NoVA?
Austria's one-off registration tax (Normverbrauchsabgabe). You pay it before you register a car from abroad in Austria. It depends mainly on the car's CO₂ emissions and its price.
How accurate is it?
We use the Austrian Ministry of Finance's formula and the rules in force when the car was first registered. The CO₂ value comes from EU data on every new car registered since 2016; with the exact value from the car's papers the figure gets more precise. In the end you work out NoVA yourself on form NoVA 2, and the tax office checks it.
